Something you should know
is that as a kid I loved the outdoors.
I ran through the woods on hot summer days
leaving screams and yells in my path.
I built forts with my friends
as if we were going to live in them forever,
then everyone was gone.
When the day was over all I could hear
were the raindrops crashing against the roof,
the animals speaking to the night, and the chirps
of grasshoppers.
Until the day where I couldn’t hear anything, even
my own heartbeat.
Perhaps this is why I am so scared to
go out anywhere. Maybe this is why
I don’t trust leaving my house to enjoy life
like I did when I was a kid.
